The Greener Grocer is a for-profit, year round produce stand, located in the historic North Market and owned and operated by the partners of Local Matters: a not for profit organization whose mission is to provide easy access to local, sustainably grown food for everyone in Central Ohio . The Greener Grocer provides Local Matters with a “public face” on our Farm to Fork program, allows us to put our commitment of supporting small to medium size farms into practice and offers valuable educational outreach to the public regarding the overall mission of Local Matters.
The guiding principles of The Greener Grocer are:
- To Offer Local, Ohio and Sustainably Grown Products
- To Purchase from Small, Family-owned Farms and Community Gardens
- To Select Food Based on Flavor
- To Honor Our Employees with Fair Wages, our Farmers with Fair Prices and Our Community with Friendly, Informed Service
- To Reduce, We Re-Use and We Recycle

The Greener Grocer is committed to selling a blend of local, organic and pesticide free produce that is “seasonal,” flavorful and that offers our guests at the North Market an opportunity to complete all of their shopping needs for produce at our storefront.
In 2008, The Greener Grocer expanded the mission of Local Matters by launching an “alternative” farm-style market in urban neighborhoods in Columbus via our “Mobile Farm Market”. This ”Veggie Van” travels to different underserved areas in Columbus, sets up tables with fresh, local produce (in season) and sells these items for a reasonable price. The Greener Grocer’s Veggie Mobile accepts EBT cards for sales transactions and is working to accept WIC and Senior Farmer market coupons as well.
